I Have A Dream
Our American history is rich with stories of great men and women who have changed the path of a nation. Can you imagine the bravery to be one of the few speaking out on a topic that is controversial? If you plan to read about Martin Luther King, Jr. this month, we reccommend the Scholastic Biography. We made our Pockets of Time to go with this book, but as it is a timeline of his life, you might be able to use any book with this product. The cards are fantastic to use for various projects besides timelines. You can use them for copywork or typing class, you can use the for book reports, outlines and even dictation. Take a moment in time and teach the kids what a difference one man can make and how we can honor a man for what good he has accomplished.
For You to See!
My kids and I just finished our Polar Express Pocket! What fun we had! The coloring, cutting, and the excitement from “winning” as my kids called it! What they meant by winning is, as I was reading to them, they thoughtfully put them into order. I would stop and read out the color combination from the answer key and they would whoop and holler about getting them ALL right.
I took this picture so many of you can see the finished pocket. Once your pocket is finished you can 3 hole punch or just place into a folder!

11. ART- Our Favorite Picks
I wonder if a lot of us struggle with an art lesson or program. By the time we get done teaching all the basics, it is hard to muster up and teach art. And I don’t mean showing them the box of leftover paper from our scrapbooking supplies and telling them to create something! We will give you some of our favorite ways to get a little art in with your schooling. Mind you, we still struggle with this ourselves but here are some of the ways we TRY to activate the right side of the brain. It IS the right side, isn’t it?
Within the Web Examples
I wanted to show you what some of the notebook pages can look like. These are pages that were made as we read off a web site. We use a lot of internet sites in our curriculum(more blogging about that subject soon!). I love to do the drawing as I teach. I am a closet doodler and artist. I have done this with all my kids. I read something or teach them something, I draw visual reminders on the board or paper as I write. I did the same thing with these pages and subjects. Older children could certainly do this by themselves. Younger kids get to add color and their own personal touch to the paper. All review the page to me at the end of the class. I love school. I hate boring worksheets. Pages like this are simple, to the point and the BIGGEST bonus is the nostalgia of this precious piece of paper our kids color and draw on. Forgive me, I am a new grandma!!!! Hope you like seeing some of our simple yet effective teaching ideas we have. Time is precious. Make the notebook pages and worksheets “work” for us!
The nail worksheet would make a great scavenger hunt in the hardware store!!!!
Blessings,
Shannon
